What is a juda pin (bun pin), and how do you wear one?
By Sakshi, the maker behind SaPrié · Updated
A juda pin, also called a bun pin, is a hair accessory that holds a bun in place and decorates it at the same time. It has two parts: a ring that sits around the bun and a stick that goes through the hair to hold it. SaPrié's juda pins have a hand-crocheted wool ring, a wooden stick and a hanging tassel.
Where the name comes from
Juda (जूड़ा) is the Hindi word for a bun. A juda pin is simply the pin for it. In English shops you'll also see bun pin, bun stick, hair stick or bun holder. They all mean the same idea.
How to put it in
- Twist your hair into a bun at the height you like.
- Slide the crochet ring over the bun so it sits around it like a collar.
- Push the wooden stick in from one side, catching a little hair at the edge of the bun, under the ring.
- Turn the stick over the middle of the bun and push it out through the other side.
- Let the tassel fall to one side and give a gentle wiggle to check it feels secure.
Will it hold my hair?
It holds medium to thick buns best. If your hair is fine or very smooth, make the bun a little tighter and tuck one bobby pin under the ring. Nobody will see it.
When to wear one
A low bun with a juda pin suits a saree or suit for a puja, a wedding function or a festive dinner. A high bun works for everyday, with the tassel swinging as you move.
