How is a handmade crochet hair accessory made, and why does it take hours?
By Sakshi, the maker behind SaPrié · Updated
A handmade crochet hair accessory is built loop by loop with a crochet hook, then shaped, finished and fitted to its clip or stick by hand. Each SaPrié piece takes about 3 to 5 hours to make. That time, and the fact that no machine can do it, is why handmade pieces cost more than factory-made ones.
The steps
- Choosing colours: the yarn is picked to match the story of the piece, like marigolds or mehendi.
- The first round: a small ring of stitches that everything grows from.
- Building the shape: petals, bobbles or a dome, round by round, counted by hand.
- Finishing: weaving in every loose end so nothing unravels.
- Details: pearls, beads and tassels sewn on one at a time.
- Fitting: the crochet is attached to a snap clip or set on a wooden stick.
- Checking: each piece is checked, shaped and packed by the same hands that made it.
Why it can't be rushed
Crochet can't be done by machine. Every stitch is made by hand, so a bun pin with a tassel is hours of work. That's why most of our pieces are made to order, and why there are only a few of each.
